Pond Help and Info Page

Help and info pages

So I have dug a hole and want to turn it into a pond, what equipment do I need ?

Here is some information to help you on your way.

1How large is the pond you have just dug as you are going to need a pond liner?

We work in feet as its more economical and less waste than buying it in Metres.

To work out what size liner you will need. You need to double the deepest depth and then add that figure to each of the Length and the Width.

i.e. if your hole is 10ft x 7 ft and the pond is 2ft deep - then you double the depth(2ft) = 4 and then add 4 onto the length (10ft) = 14 and add onto the width (7ft) = 11. This means that you will need a liner at least 14 ft x 11 ft.

POND LINER CALCULATOR

To work out what size liner you will need simply take the largest measurements of  the hole you have dug for your pond and  add double the deepest depth to each dimension, or use the handy liner calculator below.

Just enter the longest measurements in each case

Width of pond in feet

Length of pond in feet
Depth of pond in feet

You will need a liner that is  Ft.

2 Now we need to work out the capacity of your pond so we know what size filter to buy.

                             L          W          D

Feet to Litres

CM to Litres

Metres to Litres

What size filter with uv  do I need for my pond ?

You must first understand that you should have at least 500 Litres more filtration than actual pond water. This is because although the filter might say that it will work on a pond (lets say) 3000 Litres,  if you pond was 2850 Litres then the 3000 Litre filter would be struggling to work flat out to keep it clean. You can never over filter a pond - so make sure the filter you choose is adequate. If you intend to have a highly stocked Koi pond then you should aim to have a filter to cope with one and a half times the capacity of the water in your pond.

Please Click on this link for  filters/uv.

3 What size pump will I need ?

As a general rule of thumb you should aim to turn over at least half  - to -  the full capacity of the ponds volume per hour. Most of the manufactures recommend the size of pump to buy when you buy a new filter, look out for those details on our site.

i.e. if your pond is 1000 Litres then you want a pump that produces 500 - to - 1000 Litres Per Hour
