What Type Of Filter do I Want

With the gravity system the filter has to go either above the waterfall or at the side of the pond. |
With the Pressure Filter System
the filter can be placed almost anywhere ( buried up to lid, in garage,
shed, greenhouse etc) |
Pond Filters need cleaning out regularly
depending on how many fish, how heavy you feed etc. Another big difference
between these two types of filters is the way you clean them. With the
gravity filters you have to take out the sponges and rinse them out ( preferably
in pond water so that tap water chlorine does not harm the bacteria in the
sponges). With the Pressure filters, most have them have a third outlet on the
top for back flushing. The operation therefore consists of turning the knob on
the top of the filter to cleanse and the water goes through the filter backwards
and comes out of the spare nozzle that you have connected an extra hose to. You
then water (and feed) the garden and clean the filter at the same time. This of
course empties some water out of the pond. You therefore have to refill with tap
water (either treated) or if you spray the water through the air slowly onto the
surface most of the harmful chlorine will be dissipated. This is a good thing
and should be done once per month in order to maintain the PH ( alkalinity) of
the pond. If you don't do these partial water changes the pond will go acidic
This should be checked anyway once per month with a pond test kit.
How Big Should My Filter Be
You must first understand that you
should have at least double the amount of filtration than actual pond water.
This is because although the filter might say that it will work on a pond (lets
say) 3000 Litres, if you pond was 3000 then the 3000 Litre Filter would be
struggling working flat out to keep it clean. Most Pond manufacturers
quote the maximum size of pond that their filter will do. Mostly they quote a
pond with not much sunlight and not many fish. You can never over
filter a pond - so make sure the filter you choose is adequate. If you intend to
have a highly stocked Koi pond then you should aim to have a filter to cope with
two to three times the capacity than the pond really is.
Ultra Violets. Most of the filters on the website have built in ultra
violet sterilisers ( UVS) and these are correct for the size of filter they are
fitted to.
What Size Pump.
The rule of thumb is that all the water in the pond should go through the
filter in at least two hours. However with ponds 2000 litres or smaller 1200 to
1500 litres per hour pumps should be the minimum as pumps smaller will only do a
fountain.
